We are the sun.  We are the moon.  We are the sea.  We are the sand.  We are the sky. We are In Your Arms. ‘I will fill myself with the desert and the sky.  I will be stone and stars, unchanging and strong and safe.  The desert is complete; it is spare and alone, but perfect in solitude.  I will be the desert. I open my eyes and my desert soul erupts with turquoise water, floods and cascades and waterfalls rushing in around my stone, swirling and eddying around my rocky parts,, pushing and reshaping and filling every hidden dark spot. ‘ –  Kirsten White, The Chaos of Stars. And so we were, alone in the desert, four creative women, each with their own story.  We gazed at the distance, no sign of life around us.  Here we were surrounded by prehistoric rocks and wondrous geologic and floral delights.   Shaggy, gnarled trees encompassed the region around us.  The ground was filled with creosote and prickly pear.  What we experienced seemed like unreal terrains, something from another planet.  We felt the elements, the hot desert sun tingle on our skin, the heat of the rocks under our bare feet. What we never thought we would find, right when least expected it and most needed it, a rock pool of sweet cold water.  What seemed at first a mirage, something of a refraction of light from the sky by heated air, was in actual face a real pool, made by a local desert dweller who welcomed us kindly to his special place.  He had framed curved walls of his desert pool with tiny gems and christmas.  We cooled down in pale blue water which seemed almost too good to be true, before we continued our journey exploring the desert terrain. Two days in Joshua Tree and we were left with an abiding affection for the hidden natural abundance of a vast and arid space, full of possibility.
